1988 songs, for kids/teens/young adults wanting to know more about the era and what it was really like back then or adults for a sense of nostalgia. Expected it to be dominated by intolerable Stock Aitken Waterman, but found it full of moody soft rock numbers I used to listen a lot to on radio. I am omitting Guns'n'Roses (Patience, Welcome to the Jungle), Bon Jovi (Bad Medicine) and U2 (Angel of Harlem and Desire) from the list because this is more about the songs I haven't heard in a while.

I was born in '79, but I think I was a fair listener before the age of 11?

Australian and New Zealand artists Australians were listening to:

The following was an Australian hit in 1988, but was released by the group first in 1971. I have tried checking to see if it's a cover song, but so far found nothing. I am striking off cover songs here.

    The Master's Apprentice - It's Because I Love You
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKE2hmgzUgo

I would like to do this for every year after 1988, but have internet download limit considerations until the 22nd (so can't view all the videos like I did here or if I do I'll have to sacrifice some other downloads).

1927 are Australian. I was very familiar with the songs, but not the bands name. There may be a few other artists among the non-Australian acts that are Australian that others may not be familiar with. I just assumed those were songs everyone knew from the time. In fact, they don't even appear to have been a hit in Britain, like a couple of other Australian acts of the time. Solely Australian hits that the rest of the world ignored.

A lot of the rest are actually British, and many British songs do not chart in the US at all so they may be unique to our ears, too.

The latest FEMM song (3 months ago). I think about half of their songs come from Australian writers, and I suspect with the word 'speedo' this is probably another. They are partnered with LIZ, who is American.

It took me a few go overs for this to click. Not as good as their earlier stuff, but still kind of good quality and definitely not filler.

While I'm still researching 1989 (slowly), here's a sweetie from that year:

I liked Debbie Gibson when I was young but I had many more favorites before her (never got any or her albums somehow) she pops up whenever I am on Youtube trying to find eighties songs. Vanessa Williams had a few good songs. The last song is still good, haven't heard it in probably more than a decade (the second song too).

Patty Smith is the only one of the 3 whom I have any deeper knowledge, as I have an album (I think; it might have been one of those that went missing in post? don't think I ever got around to ripping it) and a hits collection by her. But since posting my post a few posts back I have bought the 1927 album and am considering the Debbie Gibson as well.

The eighties were awesome especially for music, movies and television.

    The rest of 1989.

This time I refuse to include: B-52's Love Shack, Enya's Orinoco Flow. I am developing an affection for Gyan's It's Alright (one of the artists here I must investigate and I already love Wait) but I'm not including it because I don't feel like it and it's not nostalgic for me.

Sadly, Roy Orbison had 3 great songs in 1988 and 1989 (1 solo, 2 with the Travelling Wilbury's) but he died at the end of 1988. Hate when artists die at their peaks, or his case second peak, leaving you to wonder what more he could have gone on to do. They put his guitar in a rocking chair in the Travelling Wilbury's video below.

    Alice Cooper - Poison

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal (I don't really care for MJ either, but if I were to pick his two best songs it'd probably be this and Billy Jean)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_D3VFfhvs4
Mike and the Mechanics - Living Years (I actually love this song, despite the lyrics and not having any particular affection for my father, assuming he ever existed in the first place; I love song effects and melodies, I don't particularly care about lyrics which is probably why I like Asian music so much)

The following sticks out like a sore thumb and one of the best music videos ever IMO due to (in no small part) the movie featured in it:

    Metallica - One

The easy listening happy zone! The film clips are from an early '70s film (filmed in both black and white and colour) directed by blacklisted communist screen writer Dalton Trumbo called Johnny Got His Gun from his '40s novel. The classic film might never have seen the light of day on DVD if it hadn't been for this music video raising awareness to it, a fact often acknowledged on the cover. This was the first single by Metallica to crack any of the charts, possibly paving the way for the truly heavy heavy metal bands to enter the charts. They only released a couple of token singles in small markets (mail in type singles) before then.

(There were soldiers kept alive on tubes and machines after WW1. The story is based partially on truth, but I don't believe the subject showed any indication of being awake.)

    Token cover song:

Sinitta - Right Back to Where We Started From
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2RXgHfqYx0

I don't see the point in doing cover songs that imitate the original so closely, but I do really like the song and this gives me an excuse to post it.

And the weird stuff Australians were listening to:

    Gyan - Wait
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-XEQsmEFIY
    Indecent Obsession - Say Goodbye
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqovgPtVgHU
Boom Crash Opera - Onion Skin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2FPE1Y5_4o
Paul Norton - Stuck On You
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc3Xmp-6tLk
Ian Moss - Out of the Fire (I really detest Jimmy Barnes, and probably Cold Chisel in general, but I actually like these tunes and they are nostalgic for me)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRM6n5pH014
    Ian Moss - Telephone Booth
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DyODjiLXcQ
    Ian Moss - Tucker's Daughter
